Mr. JIANG Wenhanan Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, research professor, and PhD supervisor, graduated from the Harbin Institute of Technology in 1958. Now, he is the Chairman of Academic Committee of the Institute of Optics and Electronics (IOE), CAS and the Director of the State Key Laboratory of Adaptive Optics for 863 Program.

He is a national expert and one of academic technology leaders in Sichuan Province. Furthermore, he is a member of the Sichuan Science and Technology Advisory Panel, the Chinese Optical Society (COA), the China Instrument and Control Society (CICS), the Scientific and Technological Association of Sichuan Province (SAST), and a fellow of the Optical Society of America (OSA).

In the early years of his research, Jiang Wenhan was engaged in the development of large optical measurement equipment, and made some innovative work on the theory and technology of precision shafting, fixed optical measurement systems.

In 1979, he firstly began to carry out research on adaptive optics in China. In 1980, under his leadership, the first Laboratory on adaptive optics in China was founded at the IOE, CAS. The basic techniques, such as deformable and fast steering mirror, wavefront sensing, wavefront reconstruction and control algorithms and fast digital signal processing, were established in his Laboratory; and a series of adaptive optical systems were developed. In 1985, the wavefront correction system for laser fusion system was successfully integrated with the "Shengguang I" system in Shanghai. It was the first adaptive optical system using in inertial confinement system (ICF) in the world. In 1990, an adaptive optical system was founded at the Kunmin Observatory. After then, this system was modified and installed at the Beijing Observatory as an Infrared Adaptive Optics System. In 1996, an experimental system for the correction of beam propagation through turbulent medium was established and used in the Anhui Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics. Now, adaptive optics developed by his laboratory has been widely used in many fields, such as astronomical imaging, laser beam propagation, laser beam clean-up, inertial confinement fusion, retina imaging and free space optical communication. Now his research team is focusing on basic research about the application of adaptive optics.

JIANG Wenhan has won lots of awards for his scientific achievements, such as the National Science and Technology Advancement awards,(including one special prize in 1985, two second prizes in 1989 and 1997, three third prizes in 1986, 1996 and 1999, respectively) and the Science and Technology Advancement awards by the CAS (including one special prize in 1997, seven first prizes in 1984, 1988, 1993, 1995, 1996, 1998 and 1999, respectively, and one second prize 1999). In addition, Mr JIANG became one of the advanced individuals for outstanding contributions to National 863 Program. In 2000, he was honored National Advanced Worker laureate. In 2002, he won the Guanghua Engineering Sciences and Technology Prize.

In recent yearsJIANG Wenhan published more than 150 academic papers in worldwide important journals, conference and technology publications. He trained and superised approximately 30 graduate students. In particular, one of them was honored 100 National Excellent Doctoral Dissertation of PR China; some students received special prize of President Scholarship of CAS, excellent prize of President Scholarship of CAS, special grade prize of Daheng Scholarships and excellent prize of Daheng Scholarship. He was selected as the one excellent advisors many times by CAS.
