Brief Introduction to Institute of Optics and Electronics, CAS
Institute of Optics and Electronics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IOE,CAS) was founded in 1970. It is the largest institute of Chinese Academy of Sciences in Southwest China. Since its founding, IOE made many significant achievements in the fields of adaptive optics, beam control, Micro/Nano photonics and so on, and obtained over 500 scientific research awards including special-class award of the National Science and Technology Progress Award. The institute has 1300 claimed patents, including 700 authorized patents and published over 4200 papers. IOE pays special attention to extensive academic exchanges and cooperation at home and abroad, and has hosted of Advanced Optical Manufacturing and Testing Technologies Session (AOMTT) and other international academic exchange activities for several times.
Aiming at national demands and international frontiers of opto-electronics science, technology and engineering, IOE makes research on many fields (such as beam control, EO observation and recognition of astronomical objects, Microelectronics, Micro/Nano photonics, EO precision measuring, biomedical optics and advanced optical fabrication) and focuses on fundamental, prospective and strategic technology research on optical engineering and system integration innovation research. We make our efforts to be an irreplaceable national scientific power and a famous institute in the world.
IOE has more than 1200 staff, including 2 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 1 winner of National Science Fund for Outstanding Young Scholars, 1 Recruitment Program of Global Experts, 1 Chief Scientist of National 973 Program, 8 State-level Experts in the field of opto-electronics, 13 Academic and Technological Research Leaders in Sichuan Province, 350 senior S&T personnel.
Research fields of IOE includes EO precision tracking measuring, beam control, adaptive optics, EO observation and recognition of astronomical objects, advanced optical fabrication, aerospace opto-electronic equipment, Micro/Nano photonics and micro-electronic optics, biomedical optics, and so on.
There are 9 innovation research labs, such as State Key Laboratory of Optical Technologies for Micro fabrication, CAS Key labs on Beam Control, Adaptive Optics, and Chengdu Measurement and Testing laboratory for Geometrical Parameter and Photoelectric Precision Mechanics, CAS. We also have 5 research centers that include precision mechanics center, lightweight mirror blank center, and general integration center for optical engineering. There are 2 technology centers (fabrication support center and S&T center). In addition to many development projects submitted by enterprises, IOE undertakes many key projects for National 863 Program, National 973 Program, National Natural Science Foundation of China and programs from national ministries and commissions of China. The level of researches is leading in China ,even in the world.
We have taken part in the 30-m telescope (TMT) international program, mainly developing adaptive optical laser guide star system.
Over the past 40 years, thousands of Masters and Doctors graduated from IOE. There is 1 post-doctorial station of Optical Engineering, 3 Doctor Degree Programs in optical engineering, signal & information processing and measurement technology and instrumentation, and 9 Master Degree Programs in optics, optical engineering, machinery manufacturing and automation, precision instrument and mechanism, measurement technology and instrumentation, physical electronics, signal and information processing, detection technology and automation equipment, computer application technology (covering 8 first level disciplines). Now there are more than 300 postgraduates and PhD. candidates in the institute.
