Scientists from Max Planck Institute for Astronomy visiting IOE

Thomas Michal Herbst and Peter Bizenberger, the LBT (Large Binocular Telescope) chief scientists from German Max Planck Institute for Astronomy, were invited to visit IOE, CAS by the end of April. More than 100 researchers participated in academic exchange.
Dr. Herbst gave a presentation entitled “Beyond the Fringe: Imaging, the Universe, at 10mas the Resolution with the LINC-NIRVANA”.  According to Dr. Herbst, LBT is a binocular telescope consisting of two 8.4-meter primary mirrors on a common mount. This telescope will be equivalent in light-gathering power to a single 11.4 meter instrument. Because of its binocular arrangement, the telescope will have a resolving power (ultimate image sharpness) corresponding to a 22.3-meter telescope. LBT telescope was installed at Mt.Graham International Observatory in Arizona, USA.
Max Planck Institute for Astronomy has been developing an optical imaging interferometer combined with a deformable secondary mirror to enable the multi-layer conjugate adaptive optical technology with wide FOV natural guide stars for LBT. Dr. Herbst introduced the research progress and schedule in detail.
The two scientists and the attendees discussed on related problems in depth after presentation. Two PhD candidates ZHANG Xianyu and YAN Zhaojun from the Key Laboratory on Adaptive Optics, Chinese Academy of Sciences are conducting collaborative research in German Max Planck Institute for Astronomy, in term of China-EU Joint Doctoral Promotion Programme (DPP) of Chinese Academy of Sciences.
The Max Planck Society (MPG) is the largest research institution in Germany and enjoys its high reputation in the world scientific community. The Society includes 80 research institutes and centers, engaged in basic research in nature science, humanities and social science. Since 1954, half of 30 Nobel Laureates from Germany affiliated to MPG.
