“Celebrating 50 Years of Nonlinear Optics” Report by Yuen-Ron SHEN
Professor Yuen-Ron SHEN, from Physics Department of the University of California, Berkeley, USA, has been invited to give an academic report titled “Celebrating 50 Years of Nonlinear Optics” in Institute of Optics and Electronics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IOE, CAS). In the report, Prof. SHEN has introduced the development history and important achievements of the last 50 years about the nonlinear optics in a simple way, as well as the future prospect.
Prof. SHEN is an international famous physicist, foreign academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Member of National Academy of Sciences, Member of the American Academy of Art and Science, and Member of “Academia Sinica” in Taiwan. He is mainly engaged in the theory and experiment research on the basic physics problems of the interactions between light and material, as well as modern laser technology and its applications in chemistry and material science. Now, his research efforts are focused on liquid surface and interface such as, the surface and interface of liquid crystal and solid. In early 1980s, the research group lead by SHEN has developed the interface research methods and theories of nonlinear optical spectroscopy, opening a new field of interface research.
More than a hundred researchers and graduate students from IOE attended the academic report. After the report, Prof. SHEN has visited State Key Lab. of Optical Technologies for Micro-fabrication and the Key Lab. of Adaptive Optics, Chinese Academy of Sciences. YANG Guozhen, CAS Member from the Institute of Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the Prof. JIN Xiaofeng (Fudan University), joined in this event.
